She had a “work clothes” color scheme in mind. Not pleased with the results, she put the top away for a year. When she pulled it out later, she decided to “dress it up in its Sunday Best” by using 15 minutes of play to make flowers from her scraps. After several attempts with the layout, she finished her quilt. Her play and patience really paid off. 11 Challenges to Get You Going 63 Stripes Plaids and Polka Dots, Victoria Findlay Wolfe, quilted by Angela Walters, 2011, 86˝ × 91˝ Blocks of striped, plaid, and polka-dot Made-Fabric were donated to me by participants of my “15 Minutes Play” website.

Little Brick Houses, Donna Mae Elfering, quilted by Jackie Kunkel, 2011, 53˝ × 65˝ Donna cut completely random five-sided shapes before she started adding her aqua blue scraps around each shape. She went back afterward and cut the blocks down to the size she wanted. Then she played with the arrangement until they danced around in a free-spirited way. I love playing with this technique. It is based on a traditional crazy quilt block, which uses a central starter shape. Judith Baker Montano calls it the centerpiece method in her books.

It was great to clean out my stash bins of blue scraps. I started with a 6˝ × 12˝ piece of phone-book paper. Using a ruler that size made for easy trimming later. Use phone-book paper as a guide when you are trying to make a particular size of a block. It’s lightweight, which means the paper will tear away easily. Start with a small stitch length on your sewing machine (smaller than for regular piecing) to keep your seams from coming apart when you trim your block to size. 1. Cut the phone-book paper to the block size you want.
