She had a “work clothes” color scheme in mind. Not pleased with the results, she put the top away for a year. When she pulled it out later, she decided to “dress it up in its Sunday Best” by using 15 minutes of play to make flowers from her scraps. After several attempts with the layout, she finished her quilt. Little Brick Houses, Donna Mae Elfering, quilted by Jackie Kunkel, 2011, 53˝ × 65˝ Donna cut completely random five-sided shapes before she started adding her aqua blue scraps around each shape. She went back afterward and cut the blocks down to the size she wanted. Then she played with the arrangement until they danced around in a free-spirited way. I love playing with this technique. Start with a small stitch length on your sewing machine (smaller than for regular piecing) to keep your seams from coming apart when you trim your block to size. 1. Cut the phone-book paper to the block size you want.
