Buddhists commonly speak of saving all sentient beings. So as we connect to nature, the world becomes our sangha and the creatures who inhabit it become our brothers. They are our spiritual friends, our teachers and our companions. Embraced by their love, we in turn learn to love others. When we take refuge we bow down and touch the earth. Our bodies bend to the ground and rest upon it. The experience of touching the earth is one of letting go. As the body relaxes onto the soil, it feels the ground’s solidity.

By grasping some experiences and rejecting other experiences, we filter our contact with the world, choosing to identify with those things which support our sense of identity and to reject those which do not. The reaction is immediate, pre-cognitive and visceral, like an amoeba grasping its food or pulling away from unpleasant objects.

Sundari and I are running a group which focuses on our relationship to the environment as part of the August programme at our retreat centre in France. We begin with a grounding exercise. This is our usual practice during this group, so that as we go forth we walk consciously and silently, using our senses and particularly our feet-sense to tune into the spaces which we walk through. We will look with our feet as well as our eyes and ears.
